Eyebrow Hair Loss and
Other Facial Hair Loss
Eyebrow hair loss and other facial hair loss is not very common. Generally hair loss is restricted to the head. There are, however, a few conditions in which hair loss extends to facial hair loss.
Alopecia Universalis
Alopecia universalis is a genetic disorder. It is also believed to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its hair follicles and causes hair to fall out and prevents new hair from growing. It can be present at birth or may develop later in life. If it develops later in life, hair loss will usually occur suddenly and without warning.
Alopecia universalis causes the loss of all body hair, loss of hair on the head, and loss of hair on the face, including eyebrow hair loss. Hair may grow back on its own after a year or more, or treatment may be required. Topical immunotherapy is the most commonly prescribed treatment.
Hair loss treatments like Rogaine may or may not be effective for people with alopecia universalis. It should be noted that you cannot use Rogaine on your eyebrows or face, only on your head, so it is not helpful for facial hair loss.
In some cases, no treatment is effective, and in some cases, hair may never grow back. Alopecia universalis can be a permanent condition.
Alopecia Areata Barbae
Alopecia areata barbae is a condition that causes bald patches on the head and also on the beard area of the face. Like alopecia universalis, it is an autoimmune disorder. Hair loss is generally rapid. It does not cause eyebrow hair loss.
The hair will usually grow back on its own without treatment, but this could take a long time. Fortunately, treatment is usually effective; the bad news is that it can take a while to find the right treatment. There are a number of treatments that are sometimes effective, but they are not all effective for everyone, so it can be a matter or trial and error to see what works for you.
Chemotherapy
Many cancer drugs have a side effect of causing hair loss, and this hair loss is often not limited to the head. All hair can be lost, and this includes eyebrow hair loss and facial hair loss. You should know that not all chemotherapy dugs cause hair loss, however. If you are taking chemotherapy, talk to your doctor about what you should expect.
Hair will regrow following chemotherapy, but it may take a while. Hair may also be a different texture or shade initially. It may take a little while to get back to normal, but it usually will. A hair loss treatment will not be effective while you are undergoing chemotherapy treatments, but following chemotherapy, you can use a hair loss treatment product to help speed the regrowth process if you like.
The Emotional Side of Things
Facial hair loss and eyebrow hair loss can be emotionally stressful. People may be very self-conscious about their appearance. It is one thing to wear a wig or a hat, but another thing to have no eyebrows or eyelashes. People may try to disguise their lack of facial hair by wearing false eyelashes or using makeup, but they may still feel uncomfortable about their appearance. Support groups for those with cancer or those with alopecia universalis can be immensely helpful.
