Home Remedies For Hair Loss

Many people struggling with thinning hair are trying home remedies for hair loss. Opinions vary as to how effective these might be. Home remedy hair loss creations seem to act mostly on the health of the skin and hair, which may lessen hair loss but rarely contributes to hair re-growth. This article examines various health and home “folk” cures, benefits, and limitations.

Home Remedy Hair Loss Benefits

There are hundreds of commercial products available for hair loss, but some people really want natural and inexpensive options. Home remedies for hair loss provide a person with both, very often using items that are already in the pantry. This means people can experiment in the comfort of their own home.

Scalp Massage

A lot of home remedies for hair loss are topically applied by massaging the scalp and hair. Some of the home remedy hair loss blends include:

  • Warm olive oil in which rosemary has been added, rubbed in and left for 30 minutes.
  • Fenugreek tincture rubbed in and wrapped with a cloth for 3 hours daily over 30 days.
  • Geranium tincture rinsed into the hair each time you shampoo.
  • Coconut oil, eggs, and honey mixed together, rubbed in and left for 20 minutes before rinsing.
  • Lemon juice and hibiscus tincture blended together and rubbed in before shampooing.
  • Coconut milk with any of the following essential oils added: lavender, lemon, rosemary, cedar, bay, grapefruit. Rub in and leave for 15 minutes. Note that some people have adverse reactions to certain essentials.
  • Lime seeds and black pepper made into a paste and applied on areas showing hair loss to increase blood flow (warning: may be irritating). A less caustic approach is a blend of licorice root steeped in milk and applied as a paste.

Food & Drink

If you are what you eat, then food and beverage based home remedies for hair loss can be a tasty way to feed your body and your hair. Examples include:

  • Quaff lettuce juice or spinach juice daily.
  • Drink a blend of alfalfa and carrot juice daily.
  • Eat liver, soy products, and wheat germ to support your hair’s protein levels.
  • Consume potato skins, sweet peppers, cucumbers and bean sprouts to improve silica levels, a key component in hair.
  • Add foods high in vitamin C and E to your diet, both of which are important to healthy hair. Examples include orange, broccoli, mango, avocados, sunflower seeds, and peanut butter.

These home remedies for hair loss are based on the knowledge that the health of a person’s hair is tied to diet and nutrition. Diets that include nuts, grains, fruits and vegetables seem to support healthy hair, but for home remedy hair loss success, vitamins and minerals are only one part of the picture.

Home Remedy Hair Loss Product Limitations

Obviously the home-experimenter is not a trained scientist, and often knows very little about how hair grows and what causes hair loss. A lot of home remedies are based on folk traditions, that while interesting often leave one wondering who tried them or what the logic was behind them (there is one that suggests using pigeon pee … well...). Some home remedies may prove harmful to the skin, but most are fairly safe and may at least nourish the skin and protect the roots to varying degrees.
