Saw Palmetto Hair Loss TreatmentsSaw palmetto hair loss treatments are becoming more and more popular these days. We’ll tell you what we know so far. What It Is Saw palmetto is an herb. It grows as a shrub along the costal plains from southern South Carolina to southeastern Louisiana, including the Florida peninsula. Further inland, it grows as a small palm tree. An extract from the dried berries of the plant is used for hair loss treatments and treatment of other health problems. What It’s Used For Saw palmetto is used to treat hair loss. It is also used to treat enlarged prostate glands in men. Saw palmetto may be useful in treating a host of other conditions, as well, including polycystic ovarian disease, menstrual disorders, bladder and urinary tract inflammation, and breast disorders. How It Works A saw palmetto hair loss treatment is believed to work very much like the medication finasteride. This is sold under the brand name Propecia for hair loss and the brand name Proscar for treating enlarged prostate glands. Saw palmetto is believed to block an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting the hormone testosterone into another hormone called dihyrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT causes hair loss by binding itself to the hair follicles so they cannot extract nutrients from the blood. This causes the follicles to shrink so that hair cannot grow. Take saw palmetto and hair loss regrowth should occur by preventing the build-up of DHT. How Is It Taken? Saw palmetto is taken orally, usually in a capsule form. The recommended dosage is 200 mg twice a day. It is not regulated by the FDA, however, and it may be difficult to find a standardized dose. It is available at health food stores, some large grocery stores and pharmacies, and online. It may be included in other hair loss treatment capsules, as well. Does It Really Work? Of course, what you want to know is, do saw palmetto hair loss treatments really work? As we said before, there does appear to be a connection between saw palmetto and hair loss regrowth. Unfortunately, there is not enough data available for us to say for certain how effective a treatment it is. It looks promising, but more studies are needed. For now, we recommend using saw palmetto and hair loss treatments of other types together for maximum benefit. If you experience troubling side effects, simply stop taking the herb and they should go away. If not, see your doctor. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or women who are nursing, should not take saw palmetto hair loss treatments, because it’s not known how it might affect the baby.
