Spironolactone Hair Loss Treatment

Spironolactone hair loss treatment is a treatment that is almost solely used for treating hair loss in women. Due to certain side effects of

Spironolactone that can have a negative affect on the male anatomy, it is generally not used in treating men for hair loss or other conditions.

Spironolactone is a medication that is often used for treating high blood pressure. However, this medication also has anti-androgenic affects, which make it also helpful for treating women that are suffering from hair loss. While it is still primarily used to treat other conditions, and there are many other methods of hair loss treatment for both men and women available, some physicians and patients prefer the Spironolactone hair loss treatment over others, regardless of it's side effects.

Is Spironolactone Hair Loss Treatment Effective?

Clinical studies that have been performed on how effective Spironolactone is for treating hair loss have provided mixed results. The general consensus however, is that while using Spironolactone to treat hair loss can help to stop the hair loss from occurring, there is generally little evidence of any new hair growth.

If your hair loss is a recent event, and you have yet to experience a great deal of loss, Spironolactone hair loss treatment might be a good choice for you. However, if you have experienced a great deal of hair loss, and want a treatment that is going to help to stimulate new hair growth, this method of treatment will not be very helpful, and you would probably have more success exploring other options.

What are the Side Effects of Spironolactone?

There are a number of side effects that can be caused by Spironolactone, particularly for men. Men that have been prescribed Spironolactone have experienced sexual dysfunction, impotence and breast enlargement, which is why this medication is primarily prescribed to women. However, there are also a number of other side effects of Spironolactone that can affect anyone who takes this medication, regardless of their sex.

A major concern with taking this medication is that the patient is at a higher risk of developing hyperkalemia, a condition that is caused by the elevated blood level of the electrolyte potassium. This is because you have to take such a high dosage of medication, at least 200mg a day or more, in order to see any results for hair loss treatment. This medication increases the level of potassium in your body, so having such large amounts pumped into your body on a daily basis places you in risk of hyperkalemia. If it is not treated properly, severe hyperkalemia can result in cardiac arrest and death.

Other side effects of Spironolactone include, but are not limited to, nausea and/or stomach pain, loss of appetite, drowsiness and lightheadedness, muscle pain, numbness to extremities, jaundice, skin rash and difficulties with urine and fecal excrement. If the side effects of Spironolactone concern you, you may want to consider a different hair loss treatment option.

Spironolactone hair loss treatment has proven effective for a number of people. If you are a woman and you are beginning to experience hair loss, you can ask your doctor about Spironolactone and see if this method of hair loss treatment is right for you. You may also want to consider safer alternatives.
